Sharon Taylor has been overwhelmingly selected, by Stevenage Labour Party Members, to be Labours Candidate at the next general election. Sharon, who lives in Fairview Road, grew up in Stevenage attending Roebuck, Camps Hill and Girls Grammar Schools. Sharon has brought up three children in the town and has worked locally for British Aerospace, John Lewis and the Hertfordshire Constabulary. On being selected Sharon said,

“I am honoured to be standing for the place where I grew up, brought up my family and continue to live.

“At the next general election the people of Stevenage will face a clear choice between having a local Labour MP standing up for Stevenage people or a Conservative MP intent on talking down our town and country.”

Barbara Follett Labour MP for Stevenage said,

“I am really pleased and proud that Stevenage Labour Party has selected Sharon Taylor to succeed me as their General Election candidate. She is the best choice for Labour and the best choice for the town she knows and loves so well. I look forward to voting for Sharon for Stevenage.”

I have spoke to the council loads about it but all they say is we will look into it 2 years later are they still looking its a NIGHTMARE to park. As you no most familys have 2 cars and there are 12 -14 houses in the cul be sac all with driveways but there is not enough spaces for extra cars. So please if you could look into this it would be fantastic. Many Thanks Pete

    Sharon’s up to the job

SIR – I wondered if any of you noted a news item in last week’s Comet which tied in with the paper’s Buy Local feature? I am referring to the report headed “Sharon as the Labour candidate for Stevenage”. She certainly meets the criteria for a campaign to keep things local.

As your article states, Sharon grew up in Stevenage and went to Roebuck, Camps Hill and the Girls’ Grammar schools. She has brought up three children in the town and now represents Stevenage on the County Council. She is also the leader of Stevenage Borough Council. With this in mind, perhaps you should change
your “buy Stevenage” mantra to “live local, buy local, love local and vote local.”

I have known Sharon personally for over 20 years and in my opinion she is an excellent local candidate. I have watched her progress with interest. She
was the personal assistant to the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire and then held a senior administrative post in the Hertfordshire Police Authority. She has
worked locally for MBDA, John Lewis and a number of other local employers. When she was elected leader of the town’s council the voting was unanimous. Sharon was described by a major national newspaper as being among the country’s top 30 most influential local councillors (there are over 10,000 councillors nationally).

Should Sharon be elected to government, I am sure she would hold senior government positions and would be an outstanding replacement for present member, Barbara Follett. Stevenage has always tried to be “the first and the best” and Sharon would uphold that traditions. The town has an opportunity to finally come of age, and elect a home grown candidate. We must not miss this opportunity!

Leader of Stevenage Borough Council 1971-2006
