Sharon challenges candidates to take part in a public debate

In a letter to the Comet Sharon Taylor, Labour’s parliamentary candidate, has publicly challenged the Conservative candidate and candidates from other parties to take part in a public debate.

In her letter to the Comet on Thursday 7th January Sharon said,

“SIR – I would like to start the new year by wishing all your readers a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2010 and by congratulating Janis Feely at the Living Room and Margaret Crennell of Marriotts school on being awarded MBEs for their outstanding contributions to our town.

“We know that 2010 will bring the General Election. I am proud to have been selected as Labour’s candidate and I think it is important that Stevenage voters have the opportunity to see for themselves who they think can best represent our constituency. So I hope that the Conservative candidate and candidates from other parties will accept my challenge to take part in a public debate during the campaign.

“This election is, of course, about the future challenges our country faces and we know party leaders will debate those issues on television. But it is also about who is best to represent Stevenage people. Local people must know what the candidates asking for their votes stand for and what they will do if elected.

“If we do that we will be ensuring that Stevenage people can choose an MP that will truly be from Stevenage and for Stevenage.”

If these people accept your challenge to a public debate, please let me know where and when as I would like to attend.

  • Sharon, I would dearly love the opportunity but Charles, Marion and I are never invited to the public debates, despite our protests. We feel that we are in a 2-Tier Democratic system. Con, Lab, Lib Dems and the “others”.

    Cheers…
