Sharon welcomes return to growth, but urges against complacency during the recovery

Sharon Taylor, the Labour and Co-Operative Party candidate for Stevenage, has today welcomed the news that the UK is officially out of recession, but warned against withdrawing government support while the economy is still recovering.

The figures, published by the independent Office of National Statistics this morning, show that the UK economy has begun growing again, with GDP growth estimated at 0.1% for the last quarter of 2009.

At the same time, a report by experts at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned against withdrawing government support from the economy too soon.

Sharon said,

“It’s encouraging to see that the economy began growing again in the last quarter of 2009, but the size of the growth is a reminder that we face some uncertain times ahead.  It also shows us how important it is to provide as much help for people as possible, to keep unemployment at levels much lower than during the last recession, help businesses get back on track and prevent people losing their homes.”

“As recently as yesterday David Cameron called for us to ‘tear up the spending plans announced for 2010′ in order to cut support to the economy right away. Their reckless approach would threaten the recovery and shows how much the Tories remain a risk to families and businesses.”
