We’ve been saying all along that the Tory-led Government is cutting too far, too fast. That they weren’t building in any hope for growing the economy.
Unemployment among women is at its highest in 23 years. One in four young people in Stevenage is without work or training. Small business is struggling to stay afloat, as the bankers grab their bonuses but starve businesses of the support they need.
Yes, we need to reduce the deficit, but in a sensible way which allows our economy to grow at the same time. I started the Stevenage Economy Taskforce in 2008 to bring together business, the voluntary sector and the public sector to act quickly to reduce the worst effects of the recession.
Labour has pledged to create 100,000 jobs for young people. I want to make sure that Stevenage young people get their fair share. Our young people should have every opportunity to fulfil their potential—they deserve nothing less. I want young people in Stevenage to be part of shaping our future.
